Market Declines Again

Today’s turn downs, were more moderate than Monday’s losses in excess of minus one percent, but the indices, nevertheless, posted decreases of -.81 percent for the DJIA, -.58 percent for the S&P500 and -.44 percent for the NASDAQ.

It was the third straight drop for the DJIA in as many days, and the eight’s this year. For the NASDAQ and the S&P500, on the other hand, today was their second loss in a row; the 11th and 12th occurrence in 2008, respectively.

Looking at past performance this year, as a proxy for what might happen on Wednesday, the S&P500, on the next day, has seven declines but 29 increases; the NASDAQ shows 26 gains and eight decreases; while the DJIA has only three negative closes and 29 positive days.

All three indices posted declines deeper than -1 percent today, with the NASDAQ losing -1.23 percent, in contrast to the past four days, when both the NASDAQ and the S&P500 moved ahead. But it was the second loss in a row for the DJIA.

Only four Mondays, so far in 2008, saw all three indices turning down – all told, seven Mondays had negative closes for the DJIA and the S&P500, and 9 for the NASDAQ, but just four when all three indices went down at the same time.

As for Tuesdays, there are an even number of days when these three indices turned up and went down: eight. But the record for their separate performance in 2008 is 12 ups for the NASDAQ, 10 for the S&P500 and just 9 for the DJIA.
